Whether your causal friends have become addicted to Jackbox or your hardcore group depends on you for Smash Bros., someone has to bring the Nintendo Switch. That’s not too terrible a burden to carry, given that the literal act of carrying the Switch is easy. Just slip it into your backpack (preferably with a case!) and go. Except that providing the Switch for party games isn’t as simple as just bringing the console. There’s the necessary cables, extra controllers, and of course that chunky dock. That’s where the Dongii comes in.

Dongii is a portable charger for the Nintendo Switch that’s currently on Kickstarter. While other third-party tech companies have put out portable Switch docks, Dongii’s claim to fame is that it’s pocket-sized.

Pictured above is actually two pieces – the Dongii on top, and the charger it’s attached too. The Dongii has a USB port, a USB-C port, an HDMI port, and bluetooth capabilities. The Dongii will work with any charger that has a USB-C port, including portable batteries. So potential buyers can just get the Dongii for $29, and add on extras for higher tiers.

The way it works is extremely straightforward. You plug the Switch into the USB-C and a TV into the HDMI port. This allows you to broadcast Switch gameplay to the TV just like the official Nintendo dock, only you don’t need to worry about carrying the dock or finding a place for it to stand upright. The Dongii can also be used to connect the Switch to bluetooth headphones for quiet play, or simply act as a fast phone charger.

Overall it’s an impressive little device, and promises to make Nintendo Switch owners’ lives easier. The challenge, of course, will be getting enough people to fund it on Kickstarter. Crowdfunding platforms can be fickle, and that’s especially true in the gaming industry. Great ideas can instantly find an audience, or fail to find funding despite the creator’s best attempts to draw attention. Then there’s this new thing where notable gaming companies use Kickstarter to fund their highly-requested game just for the free advertising.

The Dongii Kickstarter just launched, so be sure to give it a look if you’re in the market for a more convenient Switch party experience.
