Remember last year’s PlayStation Experience, when Sony promised that a MediEvil remaster was in the works? It’s kind of slipped off the radar since then, but here’s an announcement out of the blue: details are coming super soon.
All gamers have kind of come accustomed to the fact that we live in the age of the remaster, the remake, the HD edition, the flashy all-DLC-included port. Along with battle royale modes and open worlds, that’s what gaming is all about just now.
PlayStation in particular has been on a roll on that front. With the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the upcoming Spyro Reignited Trilogy (coming next month, after that last-minute delay), there’s never been a better time to be a nostalgic PlayStation gamer who grew up in the 90s.
The news that a MediEvil remaster was on the way was super welcome too. This was one of the quirkiest cult classics the PS1 ever brought the world, a Tim Burton-esque action adventure through the gnarled and twisted region of Gallowmere.
In this 1998 classic, players took the role of skeletal knight Sir. Daniel Fortesque, who was accidentally resurrected along with the zombie army the nefarious sorcerer Zarok has just revived himself. Fortesque’s heroic life was a lie, as he was slain while running away from Zarok’s army the first time around. Now back in action again, he sets out to earn the reputation that he never deserved in life.
MediEvil spawned a sequel in 2000, and many fans of the cult series have been clamoring for a new entry ever since. This remaster is better than nothing, but when can we expect it?
According to Reddit, PlayStation Social Media Director Sid Shuman and SIE Worldwide Studios head Shawn Layden have a big MediEvil remaster announcement to share “in the next week or two.” (via VG247). Quite what this will be isn’t yet known, but presumably gameplay and/or a release date will be on show. Maybe. If we’re all very good.
It’s all very mysterious at the moment. This is only compounded by the fact that a supposed leak (since confirmed to be fake, sadly) has already hinted at a ‘MediEvil Skeletal Collection’ containing both games. The suggestion that gameplay footage might be set to arrive on Halloween seems likely, but until we hear anything official, all we can do is stay tuned to the PlayStation Blogcast.
