According to Insomniac Games’ August 2010 newsletter, the developers behind both the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance franchises are set to announce their newest project “sometime between now and the Penny-Arcade Expo over Labor Day weekend”. And better yet, will be showcasing it for the first time at PAX Prime in Seattle.

The newsletter reads thusly:

What could this game be?  It is very possible that this project is simply the next chapter in the Resistance franchise: Resistance 3.  In October of last year we reported that a billboard advertising Resistance 3 appeared on the set of a movie called ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ in Shreveport, Louisiana.  Although Resistance: Fall Of Man and Resistance 2 both received lukewarm receptions upon their release, they still sold well enough to justify another. The franchise is certainly robust enough to support a third title in the series.

“It’s been a long road since we launched Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time to your rave reviews last Fall. While we haven’t had any new game content to show you since then, that’s about to change in a big way. And yes, we realize we’re announcing an announcement, and that we announced this newsletter announcement via a Twitter/Facebook announcement earlier this week. We feel a little bad about announcing the announcement of an announcement — but on the other hand, you’re excited and so are we.”

“With that, we’re happy to reveal that we’ll be announcing our newest game sometime between now and the Penny-Arcade Expo over Labor Day weekend. We’re really excited to finally reveal this project, and we couldn’t resist being the first to share the news with you. Even bigger news is that newsletter subscribers will be the first folks to see the trailer: the instant we announce the game — we’ll be blasting a newsletter with the trailer for you to view at home. The only way to be the very first to see what we’re cooking up next — is to be a subscriber of this newsletter —so tell your friends!”

The chances of another Ratchet & Clank game so soon after the release of Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time seems highly unlikely, though not impossible.

The third possibility is that it could be a new franchise altogether, although I believe the wording in the newsletter would state that it is specifically a ’new franchise’ rather than a ’new project’ if this were the case.

No matter the title to be unveiled, Insomniac is a software house of exceptional talent, and any game announcement they make is sure to garner quite a stir in the industry, especially since they announced they were going multi-platform.  Additionally, their choice to unveil this game at PAX Prime means gamers can get their hands on it first, which I think we can all agree, is a fine thing indeed.

Ranters, what are your hopes for Insomniac Games’ announcement?  Resistance?  Ratchet?  Sound off!
