After a hefty break after the release of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Infinity Ward brought fans back to the modern setting with 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. We’re here to clear the air, here’s what you need to know about if Modern Warfare 2 is a remake or not.

Is MW2 a Remake or Remaster?

To be clear, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is not a remake. Along with 2019’s previous entry, the new Modern Warfare saga is a reboot of the trilogy that concluded in 2011.

There was much confusion when Infinity Ward announced the return to a modern setting and called it Modern Warfare. Members of Infinity Ward, including narrative director Taylor Kurosaki, were quick to mention that despite seeing plenty of familiar faces for those whose story has concluded, this new generation of Modern Warfare is a reboot. This allowed Infinity Ward the chance to restart the story that culminated in 2011, allowing the team to tell a much more mature story while bringing back plenty of fan favorites such as Ghost and Captain Price.
