Speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour for comedy series Kidding, Jim Carrey addressed the Sonic the Hedgehog redesign and following delay as a result of unfavourable fan reactions to the blue streak.
When asked about the controversial remodelling of Sonic, he said, ‘It’s an interesting thing. You just become their Frankenstein monster at some point, right? But I don’t know. I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it while it’s happening. So we’ll have to see what that entails, because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something, and then when it gets it, it goes, “Okay. I just wanted it. I didn’t care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon,” or whatever. But I don’t know what’s going to happen.’
It’s a very long way of saying that he’s chagrined at the pressure to change the design, and that it wasn’t necessarily a unanimous movement, but that he’s not overly bothered about the outcome. Carrey added, ‘I don’t really concern myself with things once I did my thing… It’s going to happen how it happens. It’s either going to be a good thing or a bad thing.’
Cool. Ben Schwartz, Sonic’s voice actor, was a bit more lively about the redesign. In a Comic Con livestream with IGN, Schwartz said, ‘The way it seems to be going, I think people are going to be really excited. It’s incredible to me that the fans spoke, and the people at Paramount, Jeff Fowler, our producers all listened and said “hey, you know, we can do this.” So something special is coming.’
They’re taking a little more time to make Sonic, well, different to how he was. We’ll all see on February 14 2020, on the global premiere of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
