Early reviews for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the ninth and supposedly final entry in the so-called Skywalker saga, aren’t particularly favorable, but that isn’t going to stop sequel trilogy actor John Boyega from making the pre-release rounds and drumming up hype for all things from a galaxy far, far away. Recently, he’s paired up with the Xbox marketing team to check out and offer his opinions on EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
One of the very few Star Wars-related things to garner overwhelming praise, Jedi Fallen Order was heralded as a single-player, story-driven triumph. Though it may feel a bit derivative of other popular modern games, Jedi Fallen Order is definitely a breath of fresh air, and watching John Boyega, the actor behind Finn in the sequels, have fun hacking through stormtroopers as Cal Kestis is a joy to see.
Boyega, a 27-year-old actor from the UK, starts things out by describing himself as a gamer of sorts and announcing his familiarity with the most recent Battlefront titles. Though his busy work schedule obviously keeps him from honing his digital combat skills on a regular basis, he seems to have at least a casual understanding of modern gaming trends. He also admits to playing as himself in Battlefront II.
Boyega also insinuated that 2017’s Battlefront campaign didn’t really scratch the Star Wars video game itch many had and that this new title would likely go a lot further in terms of delivering the sorts of experiences fans were hoping for since Disney acquired the property in 2012. Hilariously enough, the offscreen interviewer asks him what he thinks of narrative-heavy games, and he says that he enjoys them because the cutscenes afford him enough time to eat as he plays, which is… well, we can’t knock it until we try it.
He was also asked for some insight on the upcoming Rise of Skywalker film, though he was pretty cagey in terms of details. The interviewer also inquired about his favorite Jedi, and he stated that, not only was it Mace Windu, but also that he believed that Windu wasn’t actually killed in Revenge of the Sith. There’s a pretty dedicated subset of fans that believe this borderline conspiracy theory, but, if Emperor Palpatine can survive a fall into a bottomless abyss, why can’t Windu?
It may not have been the hard-hitting Star Wars inside scoop some are desperate for in the days leading up to the new movie’s release, but it’s nice to know that John Boyega has at least some interest in the world of Star Wars video games. Perhaps we’ll get a video from Sony of Daisy Ridley proclaiming her love for the PS1 gem Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi… or not.
