id Software co-founder and videogame industry veteran, John Carmack, is no stranger to development. With id’s latest game Rage looking incredible and representing one of our most anticipated games of 2011 for all major platforms, Carmack has been able to dabble in some more mediums for his games.
As a result, Carmack has come to the conclusion that Sony’s PlayStation 3 is a force to be reckoned with its only competition being the Xbox 360, of which Carmack clearly favors.
Xbox 360, when originally released, came out one year prior to the PS3, giving developers a head start on familiarizing themselves with the technology. Developers did have some troubles fully utilizing the power of the PS3 at first, but have long since come into their own with fantastic looking offerings like the exclusive Uncharted and Killzone franchises.
Although his favoritism towards Microsoft’s console over Sony’s is evident, there’s no doubt Carmack still prefers developing for the PC as he has for his many years in the business. Though his faith in the console market certainly says something about the current generation of consoles and their capability to pull users away from the PC. Carmack’s quote follows:
Could this be Carmack’s way of predicting the consoles will continue becoming the main form of gaming for years to come? Who knows? It’s just an admission of the power of both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Will consoles completely overtake the PC market? Probably not for certain games, but console power can only increase from this point in time and possibly provide an experience akin to playing on the PC in the future. As a console gamer, I remain optimistic for that future, but I’m not holding my breath. Plus, there’s always the growing potential of Cloud gaming with the advent of OnLive.
“The PS3 is still far and away better than anything else that’s ever been made… except maybe the 360.”
What does this say about console differences for Rage on the Xbox 360 and PS3?
Rage will be releasing on September 13, 2011 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
