Following the shocking finale of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and the brief glimpses seen in the most recent trailers for John Wick: Chapter 4, fans are eager to know everything they can about the returning characters and brand new characters set to aid or oppose John in Chapter 4.And as one would expect given the calibre of acting talent in the past 3 John Wick movies, Chapter 4 features an incredible cast of performers reprising their roles once more alongside performers joining the franchise for the first, but maybe not last, time.
Lets take a look at all the returning and new faces in the John Wick Chapter 4 cast
Keanu Reeves – John WickFollowing the events of Parabellum, John has spent his time with The Bowery King healing his body and planning his next moves, which, judging by the movie’s latest trailer, sees him come into conflict with the cunning Marquis de Gramont of “The High Table”. With Winston advising John that the only way out for him is to challenge the Marquis to single combat, as win or lose, the outcome will be that he can leave the life of an assassin once more. However, as we see in the latest trailer, nothing is that simple. As the trailer heavily indicates that the Marquis has no intention of allowing John to reach their duel on time, if at all. As we see waves of assassins attacking John across the moon lit streets of Paris as he fights to survive till the morning.
Ian McShane – WinstonIan McShane returns as the charismatic and enigmatic head of the New York City Continental Hotel. But, is Winston friend or foe to John? As the latest trailer wants us to think that, just maybe, things are okay once more between Winston and John, following his seeming betrayal of John at the end of Parabellum. But, things aren’t always as they first appear, as Parabellum hinted at a greater plan at play for Winston, who appears to be using John like a Knight in a game of chess. A game that could very well result in Winston becoming head of “The High Table”, if my suspicions about his motivations are correct.
Lance Reddick – CharonWhile only shown briefly in the movie’s first teaser trailer, Charon is still a welcome sight to see, thanks to the understated but indelible performance of Lance Reddick as the New York City Continental hotel’s Concierge, and Winston’s right-hand man.How large of a part he will play in the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 is still unclear. But, it feels safe to say that we can expect to see Charon not far from Winston’s side while he is in The Continental, with a strong chance that Winston may even relay some of his plans to him and thus us as the audience.
Laurence Fishburne – The Bowery KingFollowing the events of Parabellum, John isn’t the only one with a burning desire for revenge on “The High Table” and all those who sit at it. With The Bowery King now working with John helping him to take his fight directly to “The High Table”, we see him (in the trailers released so far), taking on the role that Charon would have fulfilled while John still had access to The Continental. That of providing him with weapons and supplies, such as a brand new bullet proof suit, along with guns, and, presumably intelligence on where to find “The High Table”. For, as The Bowery King so memorably tells John in the movie’s latest trailer, “A man has to look his best when it’s time to get married. Or buried.”
Hiroyuki Sanada – ShimazuAcclaimed Japanese actor, Hiroyuki Sanada, who has now memorably starred in several big budget Hollywood productions, beginning with his first ever Hollywood, and indeed Western cinema, role as the noble and proud samurai warrior, Ujio, in director Ed Zwick, and producer/star Tom Cruise’s epic love letter to the final days of the samurai, The Last Samurai. Now, in John Wick: Chapter 4, Sanada plays Shimazu, a fellow assassin and old friend of John’s who seemingly becomes a target of “The High Table” due to his loyalty to John. As we see quick shots in each trailer of Sanada facing off the blind assassin, Caine, played by fellow East Asian cinema legend, Donnie Yen.
Donnie Yen – CaineEast Asian cinema and Martial Arts legend, Donnie Yen, once again brings his formidable talents to Hollywood cinema, with his role as Caine, a mysterious blind assassin, who comes into conflict with both John and Shimazu in several heart racing encounters. Not much is known yet about Caine, but based on his appearances in the two trailers released so far for the movie, it would appear that he is in the employ of the Marquis de Gramont. As we see him sitting in a prominent position at the Marquis’ right side during the meeting between John and the Marquis in Paris.
Clancy Brown – As yet undisclosed characterClancy Brown is one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces, and voices, having played so many iconic characters from Highlander‘s The Kurgan to Mr Krabs in Spongebob Squarepants to Blackhand in Warcraft, to name but a handful of his roles across live action and animation. And now Clancy Brown finally enters the world of John Wick, playing an as yet unnamed character, who appears to be in the employ of “The High Table” given that in the first teaser trailer, we see his ring finger cut off in the same fashion that John’s was cut off in Parabellum in order to show his fealty. Then in the movie’s most recent trailer we see him opening a case containing two pistols as he explains the rules that the duel between John and the Marquis de Gramont will be fought under.
Bill Skarsgård – Marquis de GramontRising Hollywood star, Bill Skarsgård, follows his terrifying and iconic performance as the demonic killer, Pennywise the clown, in writer/director, Andy Muschetti’s, modern two part adaptation of the Stephen King classic, IT, by entering the world of John Wick as the ambitious and dangerous Marquis de Gramont. From what we’ve seen so far, it seems clear that the Marquis has ambitions to put his own mark on “The High Table”, and he is not afraid to do it by going through one of the criminal’s worlds deadliest assassins, John Wick.Given what we’ve seen so far, it also seems clear that the Marquis will also do whatever it takes to get what he wants and he is not afraid to bend and break the rules of the criminal world in order to achieve his goals at any cost.
Rina Sawayama – AkiraPop superstar, Rina Sawayama, makes her acting, and feature film debut as assassin, Akira, who, judging from the footage released so far, appears to be aligned with Hiroyuki Sanada’s, Shimazu.
Natalia Tena – KatiaThe chamelonic and highly talented Natalia Tena makes her debut in the John Wick universe as Katia, a member of the Ruska Roma criminal organisation, who, from footage released so far, appears as though she may be a relation of John Wick. But, whether she is a blood relation or a relation through a shared upbringing as children within the Ruska Roma remains to be seen.Tena will also be instantly familiar to fans of the Harry Potter movie franchise, and Game of Thrones television series, having played witch and ally of Harry, Nymphadora Tonks, in the later Harry Potter movies, and Widling warrior, Osha, in Game of Thrones.
Shamier Anderson – TrackerShamier Anderson, who will be very familiar to fans of the hit comic book adaptation, Wynona Earp, where he played Agent Dolls, makes his debut into the John Wick universe as Tracker. An assassin eager to make his mark in the criminal underworld, who seemingly allies himself with the Marquis de Gremont by accepting the Marquis’ contract to kill John Wick.

How many John Wicks will there be?At the time of writing there are 4 John Wick movies with a 5th movie already planned, and a movie spin-off along with a TV spin-off set in the same universe due to release in the next 2 years with the Ana De Armas starring movie, Ballerina, and the prequel TV series, The Continental. What race is John Wick?John’s race, at the time of writing, has never been explicitly stated. Although, it was confirmed in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, that he was raised and trained by the Ruska Roma, a crime organisation, who, as their name implies are comprised of people of Russian Romani or Ruska Roma descent. Therefore, as John was an orphan who was taken in and raised by The Director (Anjelica Huston) as one of the organisation’s adopted children. It is possible that John may be of Russian Romani descent. Something that could also lead further weight to John’s nickname, heard in John Wick, of “Baba Yaga”.As the Baba Yaga is a figure from Slavic folklore who can either help or hinder those she encounters and is often used in modern storytelling as a cautionary tale or bogeyman to scare children into behaving.
