Kerbal Space Program was a fun game for anyone who fancied themselves as a potential space engineer. Of course, unless you were actually working for NASA, chances are that most of your attempts at breaking through the atmosphere ended up as total catastrophes.
Well rejoice wannabe astronauts, as we found out today that a sequel is on the way. And weirdly enough, even though the game is basically about trying to get your silly, little green men into the cold recesses of space, the trailer is completely over the top epic and dramatic. It seems less like a trailer for a sequel to Kerbal Space Program, and more like a trailer for a sequel to Gravity.
The trailer starts off with a beautiful, serene shot of a tiny spaceship floating over a massive planet. Soon, M83’s “Outro” from Hurry Up, I’m Dreaming begins to play, and it’s easy to think that this is all an advertisement for a big budget space drama, or some kind of Discovery Channel show. Then after landing on a planet, you see the terrified face of a Kerbal as he falls out of the ship, and you’re snapped back to reality.
From there, spacecrafts explode, structures collapse, various buildings fall on top of each other, and the Kerbals scream as they’re hurled head first into complete destruction. No matter how dramatic the music gets, this is still a ridiculous game about realizing you’re probably not cut out for space travel.
The trailer unfortunately doesn’t show us any actual in-game footage of Kerbal Space Program 2, but it does give us an idea of what new developer Star Theory is aiming to accomplish with this game. Along with just reaching space, there will also be a focus on interstellar travel, and building colonies on newly discovered planets. There will also be multiplayer, which really makes Kerbal Space Program 2 look like it wants to be No Man’s Sky, only with characters that look like off-brand Minions.
There’s no indication of a release date, which considering that this is only an animated trailer is not surprising. Development is under way right now, and hopefully it won’t be long before we can fly our Kerbals out onto new planets, and smile as they manage to find new ways to blow themselves up.
