In an interview with IGN, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters Director Seth Gordon confirmed that a musical based on the 2007 documentary is being worked on.
Gordon said some scripts have been written, and that the sheer drama of the story would lend itself to a stage musical, stating ‘there’s such a melodrama, and so many of the characters are actually musicians, and the music of the games too, is a thing.’
Gordon was doing press for his upcoming Baywatch movie when chatting to IGN, but was apparently listening to a few demos of songs that may appear in the finished production, afterwards. He added that Walter Day’s classic Museum of Your Heart will be included, because it couldn’t be left out really, could it?
While the musical looks to be taking precedence now, Gordon said that if a movie was made on his ten year old classic, ‘it’d be cool to flip the point of view and do it from Billy [Mitchell] perspective, sort of see the whole thing from his point of view.’
King of Kong is one of those documentaries where the subject matter is irrelevant, really. It’s about the people involved. Donkey Kong could be a knitting competition, and it would still be a terrific show. Hopefully this idea sees the light of day.
