Square Enix announced that Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road is delayed and will not make its scheduled spring release (via Siliconera).

Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road is a standalone game that is playable within the Kingdom Hearts Union χ app, which is already available. The story centres around Xehanort, the major villain of the Kingdom Hearts series, but explores the time before he became a Seeker of Darkness. The game will also use fast, reflex-based combat mechanics, and will sync points in exchange for battle cards in the Union χ medal album.

In a post to the game’s official Twitter account, Square Enix stated that the “current conditions” have proven problematic for the development of Dark Road. Though these were unspecified, we could guess that the pandemic has caused unforeseen setbacks, as is the case with lots of games planned to launch this year. Ghost of Tsushima changed to a July 17 launch, Minecraft Dungeons slipped to a May 26 launch, and Ninjala has been delayed to a June 25 launch. Square Enix promises that news about Dark Road will come in the coming weeks.

Due to current conditions, development for KINGDOM HEARTS DARK ROAD has been delayed.

We apologize for the late update, as we were trying to find some means of making a Spring release.

Another announcement will be coming in early June, so please stay tuned.#KHDR pic.twitter.com/xW0hWWcfFF
