It appears that famed gaming industry figure Hideo Kojima has a lot on his plate these days. Not only may his studio, Kojima Productions, be developing exclusives for the PlayStation 5, but he is also apparently interested in making movies, manga, and anime.
According to DualShockers, Famitsu magazine interviewed Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima and lead character and mecha designer Yoji Shinkawa as part of a feature on Kojima Productions’ fourth anniversary since the studio’s inception, which involved discussion on Kojima and Shinkawa’s history together as well as what they plan to do next.
Kojima and Shinkawa were asked what the future holds for them and Kojima Productions. They responded that developing a manga together would be a preferred next project. However, Kojima also said that, since Death Stranding did not call for the design of a lot of mecha, they might be willing to do an anime-related project next. He said that this would be easier to do than a game-related project.
Further, Kojima mentioned that he’d like to make movies using Shinkawa’s art.
Past the non-gaming projects Kojima and Shinkawa have expressed interest in, Kojima did say that he is working on multiple games at the moment. He considers one of the games to be “big.” He also said that he might want to work on episodic games, which would be in the style of the latest Hitman games.
Kojima concluded with thoughts on how cinema and gaming will unite at some point in one medium. Perhaps this would allow gaming to reach its most cinematic point and would allow film to reach its most interactive point.
Kojima’s consistency in reiterating his intentions of exploring non-gaming mediums is convincing. Whatever form he decides to explore, we can be sure it will be eclectic in classic Kojima fashion.
