Konami believes that PES can overtake FIFA and return as the industry leader within the next “couple of years”.

Speaking to MCV ahead of PES 2016’s release tomorrow, product manager Adam Bhatti explained that the franchise is “definitely catching up with FIFA”.

“And we have to be respectful about that,” he said. “We have to keep closing that gap. In a couple of years we’ll clearly lead again. But we have to convince a lot of people.”

Konami has ambitions to lead over FIFA “in terms of presentation” and “visuals”, Bhatti adds, even though he accepts there are things such as licenses that the publisher “can’t control”.

PES 2016 was described by Steve as “the greatest football game of all time” in his glowing review. “The question is no longer whether PES can catch FIFA, and in truth hasn’t been for a while,” he said. “Instead, it’s the other way around, and may well be for years.”

The game currently has an 87 Metacritic rating on PS4, making it the highest-scoring PES since the PC version of PES 6.

PES 2016 launches on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC tomorrow.
