L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files has been expected to get a release on PlayStation 4 for some time now, but with no actual release date reported. Now the mystery–and the wait–is over, because Sony broke the news that L.A. Noire VR has been surprise-launched as of right now!

The news came from today’s State of Play livestream from Sony, alongside reports about The Last of Us: Part 2, Civilization 6, and more. L.A. Noire VR has been out in the world since its 2017 release for PC over Steam, and it’s essentially a shortened version of the original game featuring missions selected and adapted for VR.

Since the original L.A. Noire’s release back in 2011, it’s repeatedly been given new life in the form of remastered versions on the PS4, PC and Switch, in addition to the VR adaptation. Yet it wasn’t until last month that a report from the PEGI ratings board suggested a port of the VR game for PlayStation 4 was on its way. Although those initial reports speculated that the VR game wouldn’t be released until December (and that it’d be accompanied by some prior notifications), Rockstar Games and Sony have gone ahead with L.A. Noire VR’s launch–and fans certainly aren’t complaining. That means interested parties can head over to the PlayStation store right now and grab a copy of the game.

L.A. Noire VR is a promising VR experience, if reviews of its PC version are anything to go by. When the game first launched for PC VR, it was praised for both the increased immersion provided by VR and its improved tracking capabilities. As previously stated, the game features a selection of missions from the full title, including Armed and Dangerous, Buyer Beware, The Consul’s Car, A Different Kind of War, Reefer Madness, The Silk Stocking Murder, and Upon Reflection.

Some players are hopeful that, should the game make a big enough splash with its VR and remastered titles, Rockstar Games will continue the franchise. Fans have already endured losing one L.A. Noire successor to game development purgatory, and it’s unclear if Rockstar would rescue that project or simply start over. Of course, it’s all speculation currently; L.A. Noire’s future will likely depend on how its recent releases perform.

L.A. Noire can be played on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files is available now for PC and PS4.
