Fortnite and its developers at Epic Games have teamed up with the International Red Cross, debuting a brand new game mode called “Liferun” at PAX South 2020. To kick off the new mode, Twitch streamers DrLupo, ONE_shot_gurl, and Lachlan participated in a friendly competition against each other – racing to help save lives rather than end them.

The competition took place in PAX South’s Arena area, a section of the festival that featured a decent esports stage and quality streaming production. The casters consisted of personalities Ballatw and Fickle_Platypus and both DrLupo and ONE_shot_GURL appeared in person to compete. Lachlan couldn’t make it to Texas, but did have a pre-recorded sentiment for the audience.

In his short video introduction, Lachlan expressed his gratitude for Red Cross, speaking about the recent fires in his native country of Australia. The new Fortnite mode is intended to help expose fans to the importance of the day-to-day tasks of Red Cross workers, as well as raise money for a good cause.

DrLupo and ONE_shot_GURL also spoke about why the event was significant to them, encouraging people to not only appreciate the often forgotten heroes of the Red Cross, but to consider donating to the cause.

The competition blasted off, each of the three streamers racing to have the quickest time-to-completion for each of the four missions. When the dust settled, Lachlan had come out on top, besting his Twitch counterparts despite an initial slow start. Humorously, there was physical coin-shaped trophy that the Australian streamer was unable to accept, leaving DrLupo to jokingly snag the prize for himself. Those interested in watching the gameplay from the event can find the full VOD here.

The ties between gaming, streaming, and philanthropy have seemed to only grow stronger as years go by, and it’s great to see conferences such as PAX get involved in hosting events like these. Only a week prior did Lachlan himself host a charity stream to help raise money to combat the Australian fires, during which Ninja donated $30,000 to the cause. Congrats to Lachlan on the victory; Fortnite players can now play the new Liferun mode for themselves.
