Sonic the Hedgehog’s director promised the movie’s main character would be redesigned following backlash. Now, what that might look like may have leaked.
Amid all the news of remastered games and live-action remakes of classic movies, Paramount and Sega hit us with something out of the blue earlier this year. A character from the video game world fans never even considered to be a potential candidate for a live-action remake, Sonic the Hedgehog. After the trailer dropped, most of the wold was then convinced Sonic shouldn’t be a candidate for the live-action remake treatment.
There were a number of things that stood out from the trailer, but the primary issue for most fans was Sonic’s design. The iconic blue hedgehog appeared to have fur rather than spines, human teeth, eyes nothing like his video game look, and worst of all, those ever-so creepy muscular legs.
The internet reacted with such a passion to the poorly thought out design of Sonic that the movie’s director promised he would be redesigned. Its release was also pushed back to February 2020, presumably to allow time for that. This week, images have leaked of what might be a redesigned Sonic. If so, it’s a job well done as the hedgehog looks a lot more familiar than he did before.
Twitter user @BestInTheGalaxy was the first to post the tweaked images and as you can see above, they include a much more recognizable Sonic. This is good news, yes, but not yet confirmed news. There have been multiple fanmade designs of Sonic since the initial trailer dropped, mainly by fans trying to prove how easy it would have been for Paramount and Sonic to create a live-action hedgehog that would have satisfied fans.
Whether real or not, what appears to have been skated over is the fact that there seem to be a lot of other issues with the movie which probably can’t be fixed at this point. The storyline seems weak, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik hasn’t exactly taken fans’ collective breath away either. Fans will be happy to see a new and improved Sonic, whether the above leaks are legitimate or not, but those tweaks don’t mean Sonic the Hedgehog will magically be movie of the year.
