We’ve been waiting for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Battle Royale mode for months now, and it looks like the name for the mode has finally been leaked: Call of Duty: Warzone.

This name was apparently revealed through some leaked key art that was spreading around the internet. In itself that might seem suspicious, but the art has since been removed from both Reddit and Twitter. The Twitter removal mentioned that the it was removed due to a copyright claim, which strongly implies that Activision is trying its best to plug the leak.

As you can tell by this story, it has been unsuccessful.

Youtuber TheGamingRevolution, who regularly covers industry leaks, confirmed the name in a tweet. He also mentioned that the Battle Royale mode will be a separate, free-to-play game that anyone can download, regardless of whether they’ve purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

This is a major departure from what was initially assumed by Call of Duty fans– that the Battle Royale mode would simply be part of 2019’s Modern Warfare.

This belief was further supported when the Modern Warfare Season 2 trailer all but confirmed that it would include a Battle Royale mode by showing soldiers having to quickly leave an area because of gas closing in– a very strong reference to the dangerous closing circles found in battle royale games. The trailer also showed soldiers diving out of an airplane, which is similar to how players choose their starting locations in the most-popular battle royale games.

Whether TheGamingRevolution is correct in his reporting remains to be seen. However, if it does end up being a free-to-play download, we can probably expect anyone who purchased the original game to get some sort of benefit. Otherwise there will be a whole lot of angry day-one fans out there who want their loyalty to the franchise to mean something.

The exact date for the Battle Royale mode’s release has not yet been confirmed, and neither has the season 2 release date, for that matter. It remains to be seen whether gamers really want yet another Battle Royale title, but with a big name like Call of Duty behind it, it’s likely to gain a good following.
