Those of you amongst us who enjoy slaughtering wave upon wave of the living dead - and who in their right mind doesn’t? - will probably be aware that the latest DLC offering for Left 4 Dead 2 became available for download a few days ago. Entitled, The Passing, the content pack introduced a brand new campaign to the co-operative zombie shooter but also added a new component called Mutations.

Mutations are essentially new game types that will delivered to the game’s servers on a weekly basis, each one offering players a variation on the standard modes - the idea of which is to keep the game fresh and fun for players - after all, variety is indeed the spice of life.

Valve planned to unveil new mutations on a weekly basis via it in-game message system - but of course the internet has other ideas - A user on the Steam message boards, Thegreenthing16, has been busy poking around in the system files of the PC version and has uncovered a list that seemingly reveals a good number of the Mutations.

The full list of Mutations is as follows:

  • Chainsaws First Man Out Four Swords Men Hardcore Head Shots Only Last Man on Earth Linear Scavenge M60s Max Specials No Health Versus Realism Versus Temporary Health Ultra Realism Versus Survival Vip Target

He also went on to detail three of the Mutations:

  • Guard the Gnome: A co-operative mode in which a Gnome spawns at the beginning, you need it to to make it   through the levels. Zombies will go after the person carrying the gnome.

  • Bleeding Out: Another co-op mode, all players start will temporary health that drains fast. There are no Medkits, only pills - lot’s of pills. The mode includes lots of random panic events.

  • Realism Versus: Self-explanatory, this is Versus mode implemented with the realism parameters.

While this list has yet to be confirmed by Valve, we already know that Chainsaw Massacre & Realism Versus are legitimate Mutations, which adds a level of authenticity to the list. At the time of writing, there are still 7 mutations listed that have yet to be named, but we’ll be sure to update the list once the information becomes available.

Have you had time to sit down with The Passing? What do you make of the latest undead offering?

Left 4 Dead 2 and its DLC, The Passing, are now available for both Xbox 360 and PC.
