Update 1/17/2020: Valve has released a statement denying that it is working on anything Left 4 Dead-related. Original story follows.

Left 4 Dead 3 may be back in development, suggests a new leak. Valve denied that a Left 4 Dead 3 cinematic that was shared in May 2019 was connected to it or any project being developed at the company, but fans are holding out hope that a new game in the series is being made.

The suggestion that Left 4 Dead 3 is in development comes from Valve News Network, a YouTube channel which has gotten things right about Valve games before. Tyler McVicker, the host of the Valve News Network said that Left 4 Dead 3 was cancelled in 2017 after development began in late 2011. However, a few months ago McVicker was sent 15 pieces of concept art from Left 4 Dead 3 which seems to be in development again. The images are of zombie head renders which were created by Half-Life creature designer Ted Bachmann in 2012.

The images may be from a game that was cancelled but McVicker said that there is a “high chance” that Valve is developing Left 4 Dead 3 again so that it has another VR game to offer Valve Index buyers. “I have word that there were a few major meetings that took place almost immediately after the trailer for Half-Life: Alyx dropped that essentially caused everybody internally at Valve to change everything about their future plans for virtual reality, public communication, and game development.” The Half-Life: Alyx trailers that Valve has released have been incredibly popular but it seems that the company feels it doesn’t have much to offer Valve Index players once Half-Life: Alyx has been released.

McVicker also told viewers that Left 4 Dead 3 is real and that Left 4 Dead VR is real. The two games aren’t the same game but it’s unclear how much different they will be from each other. There is also no information on how long fans will have to wait between the release of the games and if Valve could potentially make them into one game.

Fans of the zombie fighting series have been asking for a new Left 4 Dead game for a while, so many will be excited at the suggestion that Valve is now developing two games in the series. What people don’t know though is when Valve will officially announce them or when they’ll be available. Zombie games like Back 4 Blood, which is being made by former Left 4 Dead developers, could be fun to play while they wait but fans will also want to know what Valve is doing.

Left 4 Dead 3 is rumored to be in development.
