Muggles aren’t going to be happy no matter how many times Hermione casts a happiness spell on them; the collector’s edition of Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is going to cost $20 extra for basically nothing.
Expecto profit!
What the collector’s edition includes that the non-collector’s edition does not is a behind the scenes featurette, commonly known as a “DVD-Bonus-Feature-Filler” and four–count ’em–four “House Crest Lego Magnets.” Well, it’s better than just some sort of metal container. But for twenty extra bones, Daniel Radcliffe better come to your house and clean your bathroom or something. And he can’t use the wand!
Modern Warfare 2 gave you night vision goggles in their collector’s edition!
Some of you fanboys out there may argue that the behind-the-scenes featurette is a way to get a glimpse of the new movie before anyone else. But because they already included a trailer for the next movie in the DVDs of the last movie, this probably isn’t anything you haven’t seen before. It will be a trailer wrapped up with a couple shots of the production crew in front of a green screen, talking about how great the movie is going to be. They’ll reveal nothing, and then point at you and laugh when the camera cuts from them. Okay, that part I can’t verify, but I know they’re doing it.
Others may argue that at least the Xbox 360 version of the game will include a special accessory for your avatar. Okay, but that’s literally nothing tangible.
The problem is, for $20, you could buy every single Harry Potter novel. The whole set. And, furthermore, anyone who has read all the Harry Potter novels, seen all the movies, and played all the previous Lego games (like me) will avoid the collector’s edition as if it were Nagini (Voldemort’s snake–and no, I don’t go outside very often).
What about the rest of you Potter-nuts? Are you going to get the collector’s edition just because? Or are you going to skip it and get the regular version? Or are you just going to skip everything entirely?
