Speculating about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s upcoming DLC characters is nearly as popular as playing the game. And with Nintendo revealing that six more DLC characters are in the works, speculation is certain to be just as prevalent in 2020 as it was in 2019. One fighter, however, has already been cut from the pool of potential Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighters. As exciting as the possibility of Doomguy fighting with Mario, Link, and crew might be, he won’t be receiving a Smash Bros. invitation anytime soon.

The update regarding Doomguy’s fate doesn’t come from a rumor or leak like most Super Smash Bros. Ultimate news. This comes directly from Doom developer id Software. Doom Eternal game director Marty Stratton recently took a break from working on Doom Eternal to answer a question about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Metro. Asked about Doomguy joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster of fighters, Stratton acknowledged id’s interest, but clarified that the idea has “never gone anywhere serious.”

id Software has, at the very least, broached the possibility of Doomguy joining Super Smash Bros., though. “I don’t even know who talked to who, but we’ve bantered with [Nintendo].” Stratton says that id’s built up a great relationship with Nintendo while it ported 2016’s Doom reboot for the Nintendo Switch, enabling such conversations. As such, bringing up the topic of Doomguy in Smash is seen as a “Wouldn’t it be cool?” idea. That’s as far as it apparently went.

Stratton doesn’t close the door entirely on the possibility of Doomguy coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The last bit of his response to the question is, “We’ll see.” So long as id Software still has a relationship with Nintendo, anything’s possible. But considering Nintendo’s already said it has confirmed who all of the announced DLC roster slots will be, Doomguy would have to come in a speculative future wave of DLC.

The idea of Doomguy joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has always been a rather audacious idea. Doomguy’s whole thing is massacring demons and his modern iteration is best known for quick-time melee moves that usually involved decapitation. To put it simply, he’s not a very family-friendly character. That there was even the possibility of Doomguy being on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s roster, if only because id Software liked the idea, that’s more than most fans could ever have reasonably expected.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
