EA has revealed that the cover star for Madden NFL 23 will be none other than John Madden himself, who passed away last year.

In fact, there are three memorial covers to celebrate the sporting legend. One of them, the digital-only “All Madden Edition,” features artwork by Chuck Styles.

Styles spoke about the covers in an EA Sports Madden blog post, saying:

“As someone who grew up loving football, playing in the suburbs of West Philly, it’s a full circle moment to now be able to contribute to the culture of the sport by honouring an icon like John Madden, who has influenced generations of football fans through his passion for football and unmistakable energy, through my art.”

The other two front covers celebrate different times in Madden’s career. One is a photo of him as a coach. He is being carried by his team, the Oakland Raiders, after their victory at Super Bowl XI, in 1976. The second cover commemorates his days as a colour commentator, drawing his Xs and Os on the screen.

EA hasn’t announced a release date for Madden NFL 23. But the last game came out on August 19th, so it may be around then.
