While it launched to mixed critical and commercial success, Mafia 3 did manage to create a convincing portrayal of a fictionalized New Orleans in the ’60s. Now, the developer behind it, Hangar 13, is working on a new project– a project that should finally be fully revealed “in the coming months,” according to publisher Take-Two.
During its Q3 FY2020 earnings call, Take-Two revealed that Hangar 13 is indeed working on a new game, though the company didn’t reveal anything else about the title, except that fans can expect a reveal in the near future. This could mean a great many things, like a follow-up to Mafia 3, or something different entirely. Mafia 3 reviews weren’t stellar, but that doesn’t mean Hangar 13 can’t take another crack at the franchise.
This also raises the question of when the game will actually be revealed. It’s possible that a trailer could debut at the rumored PS5 reveal event, or it could be at E3 or some other event. Both are pretty realistic possibilities, though E3 does make more sense, in general, and would align with what Hangar 13 and Take-Two have done in the past.
There’s a good chance that Hangar 13 is working on a next-gen title at this point. If the reveal isn’t happening for a few more months, fans can likely expect a release date of this fall at the earliest, and possibly something even further out. There are tons of highly anticipated games in 2020, so there will be some intense competition if the game does make it out sometime this year.
Only time will tell what actually releases, but at least fans can rest assured that something is in the pipeline. There’s slowly starting to be stronger lineups of PS5 and Xbox One X launch games, and it’s possible Hangar 13’s next game could join that roster. That remains unconfirmed, but any extra games playable at launch are sure to be appreciated by fans.
Hopefully, more information about the game will release soon. Better yet, maybe it will manage to outperform what Mafia 3 did for the developer. There’s still at least a few months to wait, but it’ll be exciting to see what it turns out to actually be.
Mafia 3 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
