Mafia 3 has now shipped around five million units, though careful wording from publisher Take-Two indicates that figure is likely just under five million.

“On October 7, 2K launched Mafia III. Developed by 2K’s newest studio, Hangar 13, Mafia III received critical praise for its deep storytelling and authentic period setting. The title achieved the highest first week sell-in of any game in 2K’s history and was a popular choice for consumers during the holiday season. To-date, Mafia III has sold-in approximately 5 million units,” explained Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two during the publisher’s overnight Q3 earnings call.

Early in November 2K announced the launch success of Mafia 3, having shipped a 2K record of more than 4.5 million units in week one.

With week one sell-in so high it appears there wasn’t much need for additional stock over the holiday season, with less than half a million additional units making their way to retailers.

Interestingly, Take-Two’s CFO Lainie Goldstein used the earnings call to acknowledge that development costs for Mafia 3 were “higher” than forecast. No further comment on the matter was made.
