Although Magic: The Gathering fans are likely pretty focused on the upcoming release of Theros: Beyond Death, that isn’t the only MtG news dropping this month. Ahead of its vague 2020 release window, Magic Legends is releasing its first gameplay trailer.

Magic Legends was announced in late 2019 and is going to be a MMO ARPG set in the iconic world of planeswalking and spell casting. The announcement came along with a stylized cinematic trailer that hinted at the game’s action and characters, but didn’t reveal anything about how the AARPG would actually play. The wait is now over and fans of the card game can get a closer look at the upcoming spin-off.

The trailer comes via Game Informer as part of the lead up to a full month of exclusive coverage about the game. The trailer is action packed and definitely looks like a Diablo-style game set in Wizards of the Coast’s world of Magic. Most of the footage features two planeswalkers (red and blue, possibly Jace and Chandra) running around and battling grunts and bosses. Unfortunately there’s no sign of Oko yet… Maybe he’s already banned in this game, as well?

A lot of action goes down during the short one-minute trailer and fans of Magic will likely get a kick out of identifying some spells and abilities that are very color pie appropriate. First off, seeing the blue planeswalker float around while the red walker runs from mob to mob is pretty entertaining and seems about right. There is also a very cool moment towards the end of the trailer when the blue player uses a big tidal wave ability. It will be very exciting to see how many planeswalkers are available at launch and how different each playable character feels.

The footage is clearly labeled as pre-alpha, so fans should expect some improvements before the game launches. Interested gamers can currently sign up for the beta, but there haven’t been any dates revealed for that just yet. Hopefully sometime over the next month we’ll learn some additional details about what is next for the game’s rollout.

Be sure to check back in the coming weeks for more Magic Legends news and updates. Until then, draw well, planeswalkers!
