The beta for the upcoming free-to-play Magic: The Gathering game, called Magic: The Gathering Arena, is about to get a lot bigger, as over 100,000 invites will be sent out for players to join the Closed Beta of the game.
Magic: The Gathering Arena has been in a tight Closed Beta since fall 2017, with a strict nondisclosure agreement in effect for those lucky enough to be invited to play. The NDA has now been lifted and over one-hundred-thousand invites for the game have been sent out.
These new invites are being implemented alongside some new changes to the game, which include all of the previous cards earned by players of the beta being wiped from their accounts so that new starting collections can be tested. Cards from the Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation sets will also be added to the game.
The word on Magic: The Gathering Arena has been very positive so far, with reviewers comparing it favorably to Hearthstone. We likely have Blizzard to thank for the creation of Magic: The Gathering Arena, as the success of their online card game was probably the biggest factor in the creation of a proper Magic: The Gathering online experience.
There have been several Magic: The Gathering video games released over the years, some of which were just digital recreations of the card game, while others were set within the world of the game itself. The digital versions of the game tended to be limited to one or two sets, as a means of promoting the card game, instead of offering a full video game experience.
Magic: The Gathering Arena promises to be the most in-depth digital edition of the card game. The developers have also promised that all of the content in the game will be accessible without in-game purchases, though purchasing packs will allow you to gain access to the cards you want at a quicker rate.
