Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast made some big announcements about the future of Magic: The Gathering’s Commander format. These announcement included details on the Commander product that will release alongside Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths in 2020, a green-themed reprint collection that will remind players of MTG’s Signature Spellbook products, and a series of additional Commander decks set to be released throughout next year. However, the biggest announcement made today is likely to be the reveal of a brand new set: Commander Legends.

Magic: The Gathering’s Commander Legends set is a draftable Commander experience that will release in Q4 of 2020. Commander Legends will be sold in 20-card Booster Packs, and there will be a foil for Commander fans to enjoy in everyone of these packs. Furthermore, it is stated that the set will include reprints of the “top cards” that players have been requesting, making it even easier for fans to put together their Commander decks.

That said, desirable reprints are not all that MTG’s Commander Legends set has to offer, as it will also feature more than 70 new Magic: The Gathering Legends for players to add to their collections. Indeed, fans that are looking to build decks around brand new Commanders will find numerous opportunities to do exactly that with Commander Legends, and hopefully the set will breathe additional life into this highly-popular constructed format.

Additionally, two new Commander decks will release alongside Commander Legends, each of which will feature three new cards and a myriad of reprints. These decks will give players that have never played constructed Commander, but find that they enjoy Commander Legends draft, an opportunity to dive into the larger world of format, and it will also help established players fill out the decks that they have built around MTG’s coolest Commanders.

Without question, 2020 is shaping up to be an excellent year for Magic: The Gathering’s Commander players. While these fans do have a considerable wait ahead of them before Commander Legends is released at the end of next year, the myriad of products that WotC outlined today means that there are plenty of things for players that are looking for an alternative to MTG’s Standard format to be excited about.
