In the newest set of Magic: The Gathering, players are going to see the return of some fan-favorite basic lands. Full arts will be returning with Magic’s Theros: Beyond Death, but they don’t look quite like the full arts players have seen before.

This new set is returning players to the plane of Theros. The original Theros block was printed back in 2013, and took players to a world similar to ancient Greece or Rome. This plane is known for its plethora of gods, unique keywords, and plane-specific enchantment creatures with decorated borders. The original block never had full art lands.

Lucky for Magic players, this Theros block will feature full art basics. Each pack will contain one. Since they will be opened regularly, it will make them cheap and easy to collect, unlike some of the other recent releases Magic has had, like the Secret Lair collectables.

The art for these basics was made by previous Theros artist Sam Burley; he’s best known for his art featured on each of the mono-colored gods’ Emissaries from the original block. The Theros full arts reflect Burley’s unique style, featuring massive mana symbols in glittery, swirly mono colors. Interestingly enough, full arts have always featured landscapes up until now, so Burley’s will be the first full arts to ever feature just the mana symbol.

While these do break from tradition, these lands are incredibly beautiful. They will be readily available, both online and in print. For those who regularly buy a box, they end up with 36 of these beauties when Theros: Beyond Death releases. They will be even more beautiful in foil, making them some of the most collectible and interesting land artwork fans have seen in a long time.

But they aren’t without their detractors. Many TCG fans online have made comments about how these full arts look a lot like the Energy cards from the Pokemon TCG. Also, many fans have commented on how the Theros full arts just don’t look much like Magic cards at all. While no one seems to think these are the worst lands cards that Wizards has ever printed, they don’t really resemble the full arts players know and love.

Magic: The Gathering’s Theros: Beyond Death will be released January 24th, 2020.
