Magic: The Gathering’s next set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, will release in just under three months, which means that official card previews for the expansion are still a ways off. That said, fans can now get a slight sense of the plane that they will be transported to with this forthcoming set, as the design of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths booster box has been revealed.
The box art for this upcoming Magic: The Gathering set can be seen below, and it features quite a ferocious looking beast indeed. Placed before the creature is a character clad in green and wielding a bow, and it stands to reason that this is the MTG Planeswalker Vivien Reid. Additionally, an assortment of colorful critters can be found in the art’s foreground, though they are dwarfed by the gigantic monster that looms behind them.
Certainly, these elements are not extremely surprising, considering the name of the set, but players may still enjoy getting a look at some of the beasts that they will encounter when the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths release date arrives. That release date is set for April 24, with pre-release events beginning the weekend of April 17, but fans will have access to a full card list, which is sure to reveal a great many more monsters, before then.
To note, this is not the first time that some fans will be seeing this Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths artwork, as it previously appeared on an advertisement that was distributed during the Theros: Beyond Death pre-release. However, the art seems to be much more heavily saturated when used on the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths box, which may be an attempt to make the piece more congruous with the bold red that is featured on the rest of the packaging.
While little is currently known about Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, Wizards of the Coast has previously indicated that it will introduce “one of the craziest mechanics” in recent memory. It seems that this mechanic will let fans “play with and make their own monsters,” and it is likely that players will be able to take the very beasts that are seen in the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths box art into battle when the set is out.
Magic: The Gathering’s Theros: Beyond Death set is now available.
