Magic: The Gathering’s next set, Theros: Beyond Death, will release in less than one month, and fans are now getting a look at a myriad of new cards from this highly-anticipated expansion. Indeed, numerous Theros: Beyond Death spoilers have already revealed several powerful Planeswalkers and legendary deities from the forthcoming set, and now Wizards of the Coast has shared yet another God that players can look forward to adding to their decks.

Klothys, God of Destiny is Magic: The Gathering’s newest Gruul God, and at a cost of only three mana (one red, one green, and one generic), she is primed to come down early and have an impact throughout the game. While her 4/5 body is not the biggest for a God, and it will take some time to assemble the seven devotion required to turn her into a creature, Klothys has a flexible ability that could certainly be desirable in MTG’s Standard format.

This ability allows Klothys to exile a single card from a graveyard on everyone of her controller’s turns, giving red-green mages an ongoing way to combat cards with Escape, a graveyard-focused Theros: Beyond Death mechanic. It remains to be seen if Klothys’s ability is fast enough to consistently prevent cards with Escape from returning from the graveyard, but it will at least keep Escape-based strategies from setting up unimpeded.

Klothys’s ability has applications beyond just graveyard hate, though, as it also provides ramp and reach in a manner that may remind some players of the extremely-powerful Deathrite Shaman. In order to frequently have access to these added benefits, fans will need to play the new God in a deck that can reliably get cards into the graveyard, but Klothys is likely to gain incidental value in most matches she’s played in.

The reveal of Klothys, God of Destiny is just the beginning of Theros: Beyond Death preview season, which will really kick into high gear next week. As new Magic: The Gathering cards are revealed, players will start getting a true sense of how competitively viable Klothys might be, and they are sure to see a number of other exciting Gods as well.

Magic: The Gathering’s Theros: Beyond Death set releases January 24, 2020.
