Ever since 2016’s Kaladesh set, Wizards of the Coast has been releasing themed Planeswalker Decks alongside its newest Magic: The Gathering expansions. These preconstucted decks are aimed at new MTG players, giving them the chance to get acquainted with some of the game’s fundamental mechanics and cast of characters. This opportunity will once again be available with the release of Theros: Beyond Death, and Wizards has recently detailed the forthcoming set’s Planeswalker Decks.

As the name suggests, Planeswalker Decks are each built around a single Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker, and the stars of the two Theros: Beyond Death Planeswalker Decks are Elspeth and Ashiok.  For the uninitiated, Elspeth is a mono-white Planeswalker that first appeared in Shards of Alara and Ashiok is a blue-black Planeswalker that debuted in the original Theros, and both appear in new incarnations in the standard Theros: Beyond Death set.

That said, the Elspeth and Ashiok that will be found in Theros: Beyond Death Draft Boosters are not the ones that are included in the Planeswalker Decks, and those Planeswalker Deck variants can be seen below. As many MTG players will expect, these variants of Elspeth and Ashiok, dubbed Elspeth, Undaunted Hero and Ashiok, Sculptor of Fears, do not appear to be as powerful as those that are printed in the main set, but new players should still find some fun with them.

Additionally, the Theros: Beyond Death Planeswalker Decks will backup Elspeth and Ashiok with a number of other cards that are exclusive to these Magic: The Gathering precons. Those exclusive cards can also be found below, alongside full decklists for both of the Theros: Beyond Death Planeswalker Decks, and they paint a clear picture of how these decks will function. More specifically, the Elspeth deck looks to play a very straightforward aggressive game, while the Ashiok deck is built around filling up graveyards.

For players that are interested in obtaining a Theros: Beyond Death Planeswalker Deck, they will be available beginning January 17. Indeed, this is the same date that the set’s pre-release events begin, and fans that have been waiting for a new draft format as well as a shakeup to Magic: The Gathering’s Standard format should make sure to have that day marked on their calendars.

Magic: The Gathering’s Theros: Beyond Death set releases January 24, 2020.
