Paradox’s free-to-play title Magicka: Wizard Wars will be permanently going offline in summer. A post on the game’s forums, ominously titled “An Important Update” (the “We Need to Talk” of videogame updates) says the servers will be going down on 21 July.

Development on Magicka: Wizard Wars had already ceased, but the servers were left up to allow people to keep playing. “Unfortunately though we have reached the point where we can’t economically justify to continue running the costly server infrastructure,” the post states. “To make things clear, these last 9 months haven’t been a money-making exercise for us (for the most part server costs weren’t covered) we simply wanted to let those of you who loved the game play for as long as was possible.”

All items and bundles with a real money cost have either been removed, or can now only be purchased with in-game virtual crowns. Across the next three months, the game might be getting a few new additions: “We will do our best to introduce any old content we have collecting dust in our archives, so you may see some new bits and pieces appearing (Not 100%, depends on work needed, we will try though!)”

Any players who have “boosters” that would run until after 21 July are encouraged to contact Paradox support (www.paradoxplaza.com/support) who will deal with refunds as and where appropriate.
