Rumours are swirling that the music-streaming service Spotify could be making its way onto the Xbox One in the not-too-distant future. A Reddit user has spotted Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, using the Spotify app on his Xbox, which could mean good things for Xbox One owners and those who aren’t fans of the Groove Music app.
Sony and Spotify signed an exclusive deal to bring Spotify to the PS4 back in 2015, resulting in the culling of the Music Unlimited service and the launching of the PlayStation Music hub, where the Spotify app resides to this day.
Sony and Spotify have always maintained this was an exclusive partnership, but Spotify had never ruled out appearing on other platforms further down the line. Now it seems we may well be down the line.
There’ve been a number of Spotify sightings in the last few days, but Major Nelson being caught using the app is the closest thing to a confirmation yet. Another Reddit user also spotted a clue on the Microsoft retail training portal which teases the launch of the Xbox app, saying, ‘This week, Microsoft announced huge news that impacts more than one of those devices. Today, Spotify is coming to Windows 10 PCs and Xbox’. Meanwhile, the Verge claims to have an insider contact which confirms this.
Obviously, there has been no official announcement from Microsoft or Spotify, but that’s to be expected until either is ready to confirm any news on the matter.
The question remains though, if this is true, does it mean the end of the road for the Groove Music service?
