A 50-year-old man was recently arrested in Japan for selling an x-rated body pillow.

On September 12, a man in Ichikawa city was arrested for allegedly selling an inappropriate body pillow cover, which is also known as a hug pillow or dakimakura. The office worker, who denies all charges, is suspected of violating copyright laws by selling a pillow featuring a character from the Love Live! anime. The alleged sale took place on May 2 and was a resale, according to police. Police also believe the man had sold items over the last three years for a total of three million yen or $27,750 USD.

A dakimakura is a pillow that is twenty by fifty-four inches. Its style was initially designed for people who prefer to sleep on their side. It is extremely comfortable for those who enjoy sleeping on their side, as the pillow is large enough to spoon.

As body pillows became popular in Japan, so did slip-on covers featuring popular anime characters. Eventually, as anime became more and more popular in the west, western characters also appeared on body pillows. The depictions on dakimakura range from fairly neutral images to inappropriate depictions. Since body pillows typically have two sides, the images vary per side. A double-sided cover was allegedly bought and then resold in violation of Japanese copyright law.
