If video games are good at anything, its putting players in roles that allow them to fulfill some type of fantasy, whether that’s as a mighty warrior, like in Elder Scrolls, or as a humble goose, as is the case in Untitled Goose Game. Of course, for those with a fascination with the underwater world, there’s Maneater, an upcoming game that will put players in control of an upgradeable shark terrorizing the seas - and land, apparently.

Shown at tonight’s Game Awards, Maneater will allow players to upgrade a shark with the intention of munching on one of their favorite snacks: people. The trailer showed off a variety of sharks, some very simple and others with neon striping and other mutations. It seems reminiscent of the JAWS video game from the Xbox and PS2, though JAWS can be something of a voodo curse. Of course, the ability to actually evolve the sharks is a pretty interesting twist. It’ll be interesting to see just how it affects gameplay, but it should help spice things up quite a bit.

Right now, the game is slated to launch late in May of next year, meaning that players have a relatively small amount of time to wait before they can get their hands, or fins, on it. Maneater was originally announced back in August, but this is the best look fans have gotten of the game so far. Graphically, it doesn’t appear the sharpest game out there, though it does seem to be going for a pretty particular art style, which it seems to be achieving/

Shark’s are no strangers to video games, but it isn’t often that they’re the protagonists of their own titles. Usually, the animals are reserved for big bads in underwater levels, making them a pretty big annoyance. Hopefully, Maneater does justice by the shark species that is named after a video game, or at the very least, hopefully there’s a tree that lets the shark grow legs to terrorize beaches.

Maneater is slated to launch on May 22, 2020.
