It appears that Mark Wahlberg will be the man who plays Sully in Sony’s Uncharted movie.

Tom Holland has already been confirmed to play Drake in the film but there’s been a wait over who lands the role his mentor Sullivan, with Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston initially thought to be the one. According to a report from Variety, though, Wahlberg is nearing the end of a discussion with Sony.

Sully is a recurring character in the Uncharted video game series. The American businessman and treasure hunter is close friends with Drake throughout and he was always going to play a major role in the game’s film adaptation.

Rather ironically, Mark was actually poised to play Drake in an adaptation many years ago but the project has been stuck in limbo since director David O. Russell left it in 2011. Per Variety, Wahlberg wants to be involved in the movie in some capacity now that it’s set for production again.

“Mark Wahlberg is in final talks to co-star with Tom Holland in “Uncharted,” Sony’s upcoming adaptation of the hit video game,” the source reports.

“Travis Knight (“Bumblebee”) is directing the movie that follows Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who journeys across the world to uncover various historical mysteries. Wahlberg will portray Victor “Sully” Sullivan, an American treasure hunter, fortune seeker and businessman, as well as a friend, mentor and father figure to Drake. Holland is set to play Drake.”

Knight made a huge impression with his directing of Transformers spinoff Bumblebee last year and replaced Dan Trachtenberg as the man in charge of Uncharted back in September.

The video game series started off in 2007 by developers Naughty Dog and was published by PlayStation. It has sold more than 41 million copies to date and its film adaptation is expected to very well.

Meanwhile, the adaptation has been given a release date of December 18, 2020.
