Square Enix has been working on Marvel’s Avengers for the better part of this console generation, and after finally being revealed at E3 2019, more details on what players can expect from next year’s superheroic action game have emerged. Developer Crystal Dynamics highlighted the game’s split mission structure in a Twitter post shared over the weekend.

While inspired by the big-screen Marvel cinematic universe and a half-century of comics, Marvel’s Avengers is a new take on the titular superhero team, letting players step into the shoes of Captain America, the Hulk and their fellow crimefighters on their own or with friends in an original universe with its own independent continuity and storyline.

Players will be able to choose between Hero Missions and Warzone missions in Avengers. The Hero Missions will comprise the action title’s single-player campaign, while the Warzone Missions can be played with anywhere from 1 to 4 players. All of the game’s content will be accessible from the Chimera helicarrier base, where players will also be able to customize their own Avengers team with costumes and abilities.

Early impressions of Avengers have noted Crystal Dynamics’ early design choices echoing those of shared world games like Destiny 2, Warframe and The Division 2, and having a distinct single-player story alongside replayable cooperative missions will be a familiar setup to those who might have played those titles in the past. Allowing players to regroup and assemble their teams in the central helicarrier social space even brings Destiny’s Tower to mind.

The strongest differentiating factor that Marvel’s Avengers will have as it enters an already crowded space of multiplayer-focused action titles will be the team of heroes itself. The game already has beloved pop culture icons like Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow in the playable roster, but fans are hoping for the cast of Avengers to expand further into Marvel’s rich well of iconic characters, and the unique abilities of some of the Marvel universe’s lesser known personalities could make for unique, fun gameplay options. Crystal Dynamics plans to add additional content and heroes into the game after its spring 2020 launch, so here’s hoping it’ll live up to that potential.

Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020 for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Stadia.
