As promised, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics released footage of Marvel’s Avengers during Gamescom 2019. The video shows gameplay from Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Captain America, but is limited to the game’s introductory tutorial level. Luckily a watchful YouTuber named JorRaptor spotted some additional, brand new footage being shown on side screens at the Marvel’s Avengers’ booth. The new footage showcases previously unseen aspects of the game including costumes, finishers, and enemies.
Each sequence of the new video focuses on a different playable character in Marvel’s Avengers. A sequence starts with a profile of sorts, showing the character’s name, weight, height, occupation, and powers. It then cuts to a series of shots showing the character’s in-game model in an idle animation. Here’s where the fun begins. Some of the short clips show off different costumes for the character.
After showing off each character’s look and at a costume close-up, the videos cut to gameplay. Here players get to see what seems to be each hero’s combat finisher. As in, once a hero has done enough damage to a character, they can perform a combat finisher. Hulk can step on an enemy and Thor performs tricks with his hammer and lightning, for example. Finishers also appear to heal the hero, as is shown with a green glow.
The final big detail to take away from the new footage is the new enemies. In the earlier footage, the only enemies shown were armored mercenaries. In this new footage, two new enemy categories are shown. There are robots, not unlike Iron Man’s armor but independently powered and controlled. And then there are what appear to be AIM scientists in hazmat suits. No new named villains like Taskmaster make an appearance in the new footage.
The new footage offers some exciting new details about Marvel’s Avengers. The first look at the game’s costumes ranges from smaller changes like Thor’s armor to bigger ones like Joe Fixit Hulk. And then there’s a good look at combat finishers, which implies Marvel’s Avengers may be implementing gameplay combat akin to God of War or Rocksteady’s Batman games. There’s a lot left for Square Enix to share about Marvel’s Avengers, but it’s certainly growing more and more interesting with each bit of news.
Marvel’s Avengers releases May 15 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
