Today, Crystal Dynamics unveiled the sixth playable character slated to appear in Marvel’s Avengers: Inhuman Kamala Khan, otherwise known as Ms. Marvel. She’s introduced in the latest trailer for the game, but as it turns out, Ms. Marvel is more than just a player character–she’s both a narrator in previous game trailers and plays a critical role in the main plot.

All of this new information came from New York Comic-Con’s Marvel Games panel, which debuted Kamala Khan’s trailer. She joins the main cast of Marvel’s Avengers that includes Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor.

Kamala Khan’s big role is essentially that of a unifier–in her trailer, she’s shown to be assembling the Avengers after years of being defunct following the disaster of A-Day (which supposedly kills Captain America). In her quest to reunite them Kamala exercises her considerable powers, which Crystal Dynamics has also offered a look at; she’s a polymorph, with the ability to grow and “embiggen” her body as she sees fit. “Kamala’s powers have to do with stretching and morphing her body into crazy shapes,” said Crystal Dynamics narrative designer Hannah MacCleod in an interview with GamesRadar. “These powers introduce a totally new element to our game and make our combat and exploration completely unique.”

In the Marvel Games panel, it was also revealed that Kamala has been part of Marvel’s Avengers’ promotion since the beginning. She narrated the first trailer and made a secret cameo in San Diego Comic Con’s gameplay screening. “Literally that first voice you hear, people are like ‘who’s this talking’ and then if you look at every piece we’ve done since then, it’s about her, it’s actually her telling you the story,” said Scott Amos, Crystal Dynamics’ Head of Studio.

So Ms. Marvel is confirmed for Marvel’s Avengers, and she’s got one of the most important roles–if not the most important role–of the main cast. Add to that some truly memorable-looking combat moves, and things seem to be looking up for the game after its recent costume controversy. All in all, it’s about time Ms. Marvel got some attention.

Marvel’s Avengers launches on May 15, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
