It is looking like there will be more villains than Taskmaster and Abomination in the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers game from Crystal Dynamics. In a recent interview a developer hinted that more villains are set to come to Marvel’s Avengers, either at launch or after, but did not specify which ones.

Currently it is known that a group called Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M) are the central villains of the superhero co-op adventure. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby 1966, they initially served as a branch of the organization THEM, which was an offshoot from the HYDRA that current Marvel Cinematic Universe fans know. It’s unclear what form A.I.M will take in Marvel’s Avengers but in the past it was included cult Marvel favorite villain MODOK.

In an interview with Hot 97’s HipHopGamer, Crystal Dynamics’ lead combat designer Vincent Napoli spoke about the upcoming game’s villain situation. “We have a lot of villains planned that we haven’t even talked about yet, Napoli said. “And a couple of them I’ve been a fan of for a long time.”

If A.I.M is the main antagonist for the entire launch game, it would make sense to see MODOK, who has yet to appear in the MCU or any major Marvel release since the recent boom of popularity. His inclusion in the Marvel vs Capcom fighting game series is the closest MODOK ever got to the mainstream, maybe because it would be too much work to make his oversized head and tiny body look anything but super silly on screen. But while Marvel’s Avengers is sticking to more traditional heroes it would be interesting to see an interpretation of MODOK or an even more obscure villain in the game.

Earlier this month at New York Comic Con, Ms. Marvel was revealed to be the sixth playable hero in Marvel’s Avengers. This is adding to the roster of playable Avengers that include Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Hulk. Hopefully the choice to include the new, and very popular, Ms. Marvel will pave the way for Marvel’s Avengers to stand on its own outside of the MCU, especially after the underwhelming initial response fans had to the game and its faces and character models.

Marvel’s Avengers releases May 15, 2020 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
