Developer Firaxis has shown off almost twenty minutes of new gameplay from upcoming strategic superhero brawler Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
The gameplay showcase yesterday evening featured Creative Director Jake Solomon, Franchise Producer Garth Deangelis and producer Caroline Guervara, as they talk us through the game’s card-based gameplay system.
Your abilities are dealt to you at the start of a round as the aforementioned cards. There’s three specific types of abilities; Attack, Skill and Heroic. Attacks are just as they sound, while Skill cards infer buffs on allies or status effects on enemies. Attacks and skills then build up Heroism, a resource which can then be spent on the most powerful Heroic cards. These are super-powered abilities that can have devastating effects on your enemies and change the tide of battle.
Some of these cards and abilities will rely on the environment and your position in it. To that end you can discretely move your heroes around the battlefield in order to maximise their effect and impact. Each hero will play very differently and also have unique cards. There’ll also be cards that let you use combinations of heroes to pull off super-attacks.
We’re then thrown into a campaign mission as we see The Hunter team up with Wolverine to take on Sabretooth. You’ll fight plenty of famous Marvel villains over the course of the game, including followers and even heroes who have been corrupted by big bad Lillith. Villains too have their own unique abilities, and you’ll have to adjust your tactics appropriately.
