Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 was such a hit that a comic book following the events of the game will be released later this year.

One of the biggest games of the last year, or even the last few years if you ask us, was 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. Spider-Man might well be Marvel’s most exposed superhero, but Insomniac did the web-slinger justice as no one has done before. The story was terrific, the graphics were spot on, and the gameplay was second to none.

The great thing about Marvel, particularly Spider-Man, is that there are decades of different storylines and universes to choose from. It’s why we continue to see different remakes of the franchise with different actors, villains, love interests, and even different Spideys. We continue to see various movies and games based on the comics, but this might be the first time we have seen a comic based on a game.

That’s right, the award-winning game inspired by a comic book has, in turn, inspired a brand new comic book. Marvel revealed this week that later this year, it will release a comic that follows up with what happened in last year’s Spider-Man game. The spinoff will be called Spider-Man: Velocity and, unsurprisingly, focus in on Spidey’s Velocity Suit.

“Dennis ‘Hopeless’ Hallum continues the saga of the spectacular Spider-Man with an all-new story set in the Gamerverse!” Marvel revealed via its press release. The cover art for issue #1 has also already been released which you can check out above. The release also reads that Spider-Man’s next foe will be Swarm, plus we will get to see more of Mary Jane Watson as she works alongside Ben Urich at the Daily Bugle.

Incredibly intriguing and definitely a comic we plan on picking up when it’s released in August of this year. However, we wonder what this means for a Spider-Man sequel on the PS4, or perhaps the PS5. Devs have hinted that they want the game to be to their universe as Iron Man was to the MCU. Perhaps Spider-Man: Velocity could hint at what’s next for the games, or maybe it will venture off into a different reality.
