After a teaser last month, Nintendo is finally talking more concrete details for the release of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s “Fantastic Four” DLC pack. Titled “Shadow of Doom,” players will be able to download this add-on starting March 26, 2020. You’ll only be able to grab it as part of the full season pass, which retails for an extra $20 on top of the main game.
The description of Nintendo’s Tweet doesn’t make it clear if this new pack will be similar in scope to previous ones or contain some actual story additions. It would be silly to expect villain Dr. Doom as a playable character, but the text makes it seem like players will be teaming up as the Four and taking on the mad doctor. That would be a huge upgrade over the previous (very lackluster) DLC packs.
From the promotional image, it looks like The Human Torch, The Thing, Sue Storm, and Mister Fantastic will be playable. I’m very partial to the designs used here. That mixture of black and blue is a nice mix-up from the classic style -which featured the colors in reverse-.
With the release of this pack, Ultimate Alliance 3’s DLC will be complete. Nintendo hasn’t mentioned anything about a second season pass, though that seems unlikely. Ultimate Alliance 3 has been a moderate success for the company and there’s no real reason to add anything extra. Basically every hero you can think of is already there, minus a few favorites that might require too much tinkering to get working.
Ultimate Alliance 3 may not be the best Marvel game around, but it captures the fun style that the comics are all about. While the roster contains a lot of characters from the MCU, the inclusion of the X-Men and Deadpool shows that its creators were given the freedom to focus on making a good game instead of appeasing Disney. It also allows for some awesome teams.
It might be too early to think about a fourth game, but Nintendo and Team Ninja created a pretty solid little brawler. With some better DLC for future games, we could have a contender for the ultimate Marvel team-up.
