Remedy Entertainment has announced it’s partnering with Rockstar to remake classic noir action shooters Max Payne 1 & 2.

As per a press release, both the original Max Payne and its sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne will get the remake treatment. Remedy will remake both games using its Northlight engine, the same engine seen in Control. Both games will be released as a single package on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.

In case you’re somehow not familiar, the Max Payne series casts you as hard boiled detective Max Payne. After his investigation into a street drug goes horribly wrong, he’s embroiled in a world of guns, violence and murder. The series is perhaps most famous for introducing ‘Bullet Time’, a mechanic where you could slow down time to avoid and return fire on your assailants.

Rockstar will finance the project, which the announcement says will be “in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production”. In fact, Remedy will also keep additional royalties once Rockstar has recouped its costs. Rockstar’s Sam Houser even provides a quote. “We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

There’s no release date for the project yet, with the announcement noting its still in the concept development stage. So it’s early days, but hopefully we’ll see more from the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes in the not-too-distant future.

We are pleased to announce that we will remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, in a new development agreement with Rockstar Games.
