Ah, remember the old days of console launches? When companies went to E3, and Wired Magazine wasn’t weirdly pertinent to the inner workings of Sony and the PS5?
Well, times are different. While we already know some interesting details about Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, including that car crash of a name and what the console looks like, we have gotten a logo and literally nothing else from Sony.
Sony’s In Control
That said, there could be a good reason for all this. There’s a good chance that Sony just doesn’t have much to show us yet.
Save for some major blunder, Sony is positioned to be the de facto champ for the ninth generation of consoles. They were able to just post a PlayStation 5 logo and get the most likes on Instagram ever for a gaming-related post. Sony has no need to put on a big show to convince fans to buy a PS5, as they have the clout at this time to be in control of exactly how they want their messaging to go.
Sony is not in a rush to get their news out. According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony doesn’t quite know how they want to price the PS5, with the system costing about $450 to produce based on parts and assembly alone. Thus, they’ve taken more of a wait and see approach - as in, “wait and see what Microsoft is going to do.” They could decide to go toe-to-toe with Microsoft and price the PS5 the same as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, or they could take a loss and give it a more consumer-friendly price.
Add in reports that the PS5 could end up being less powerful than the Xbox Series X, and it just cements the fact that Sony shouldn’t get ahead of Microsoft. They need to wait and see how Microsoft presents its new console. From there, they can fire back in the way that makes the most sense for them.
Now We Wait
We’re almost through February already, and there have been no launch events for the system yet. When we’re going to get info on the system is completely up in the air. But that’s exactly how Sony wants it to be. They will wait as long as they see fit to begin promoting the PS5. Until then, they don’t have anything to show us, and that’s just fine.
We’ll just sit here and wait patiently until we are graced with the presence of the PS5.
