Quite surprisingly, Medal of Honor was officially resurrected once again earlier this year. Just like the self-titled entry that dropped a decade ago, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is another series reboot of sorts. This time we’re back in World War II though, for the series’ virtual reality debut. A few months after its unveiling, developer Respawn Entertainment has detailed the multiplayer offering for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will contain five multiplayer modes when it launches later this month. The new trailer showcases the online portion in action, and it looks like your typical World War II shooter affair. However, like the rest of Above and Beyond, the VR element will surely set it apart. After years of the FPS genre moving away from the era, an online WWII shooter in VR sounds like one way to revitalize the sub-genre.
Above and Beyond comes from developer Respawn Entertainment, so it’s no surprise multiplayer is a prominent feature. The studio is responsible for the Titanfall series and Apex Legends, both of which excel in online form. The pedigree of the studio runs a little deeper than that, though.
A historic partnership
Studio head Vince Zampella actually worked on the old Medal of Honor series, when it was a bit more relevant. The developer then co-founded Infinity Ward, who shot Call of Duty towards stardom. It’s sort of strange to see Zampella back at the helm of the Medal of Honor series, and we’re interested to see where the series goes from here.
For now though, Above and Beyond looks like it will deliver a true return to form for the series. The new multiplayer gameplay looks like old school WWII shooter fun, and we’re eager to test these classic weapons out in VR. Thankfully, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will now come to Steam with OpenVRSupport. It was initially announced as an Oculus exclusive before plans changed.
In addition to Above and Beyond’s single-player campaign, you can master the distinctive handling of a host of WWII weapons and test yourself against opponents in five multiplayer modes on sites across Europe.
