A MediEvil demo just leaked on the PlayStation Store but was soon taken down.

Remember when game makers used to hand out demos? Probably not. That was a thing that used to exist back in the ‘90s for disc-driven consoles and PCs. CDs were cheaper than paper, so it cost a publisher virtually nothing to put a scaled-down version of a game on a single disc and mail it out to anyone who wanted to test drive their game before buying.

Now that we’re in the digital age, demos are almost unheard of. You’ll occasionally see one at a trade show, but they’re never handed out to and you have to play the demo while sitting at their display.

But it looks like MediEvil is doing more than just recreating a ‘90s classic–they’re also recreating that ‘90s feel with a demo version of the game so you can try it out before you buy.

As usual, the news broke on Reddit courtesy of user “nolifebr” who posted a link to the Sony PlayStation store over in Japan. On it was an 11.6 GB download for the MediEvil demo which contained the first two areas of the game: Dan’s Crypt and the Graveyard.

That demo was sadly taken down almost as soon as it went up, but it means that it exists. And if it exists in Japan, a Western version is almost a sure thing.

Fans on the post speculate that the demo was posted early and that it will officially be unveiled at the next State of Play. Which is actually checks watch today (September 24th) at 4:00 PM. Wow. That didn’t take long.

Since demos are probably new to most of you, expect it to basically be like the game version of a teaser. You’ll get the first two levels and then be told: “Congratulations! Now go buy the real game.”

MediEvil releases on October 25th for the PS4, just in time for Halloween.
