Fans of Sony’s long-dormant MediEvil franchise were treated to a welcome addition this weekend in the form of the PlayStation 4 remake of MediEvil. After 21 years, the original adventure of skeleton knight Sir Daniel Fortesque has been dusted off and polished for the HD era.
With all the time that’s passed since 1998, many players are bound to be heading into this game for the first time, which means they won’t immediately know where to find the game’s 20 chalices. These are collectibles that grant various weapons and items, with one in nearly every level. To collect one, players must first fill it by killing enough enemies in the level (their progress shows every time they kill an enemy) and then carry it to the end without getting a game over or quitting first.
While it’s not necessary to collect all of the chalices to complete the MediEvil remake, they are needed to unlock a better ending given to those who reach 100% completion. It helps, then, to know where to find them all.
#1 – The Graveyard
Around the halfway point of this level, past a rune-locked gate, players can come across an angel statue. Hitting it causes the statue to turn, opening a gate to its right which leads to the chalice. As with plenty of the chalices to come, players will likely not have killed enough enemies by this point, so they’ll have to press on and backtrack once they’ve killed enough enemies in order to collect a full chalice.
#2 – Cemetery Hill
On the hill with the rolling stones, there’s a spot to the left where players can jump down into an area with two headless zombies and a chest. Inside the chest is a club that can be used to smash the big rock blocking the entrance to the witch’s cave on the far right side of Cemetery Hill, as well as a bookshelf blocking off a ritual room inside the cave. Pressing the circle button makes Sir Daniel hold out the club and set it on fire. With the flaming club in hand, players then need to head to the cave’s prison cells and light up the brazier in the middle of the room. This opens the cells, including the one the chalice is in. Players can also find an item called the Witch Talisman here, which they’ll need to get another chalice later on.
#3 – The Hilltop Mausoleum
The chalice in this level is behind a secret door in the room with a ghost playing a piano. Opening the door, however, first requires players to give the ghost some sheet music, which is hidden away in a cellar with colored glass windows located earlier in the level.
#4 – Return to the Graveyard
This chalice is easy to find, as it’s located on the level’s main route, inside a house set into the base of hill. Collecting the rune on top of the hill lets players enter the house, where they’re greeted with the chalice right there in front of them.
#5 – Scarecrow Fields
Near the end of the level, players can see the chalice off in the distance, inaccessible at that moment. To make it accessible, they have to make their way across fields full of deadly farm-themed traps and solve a puzzle involving collecting a harvest machine’s missing part. The machine will then mow a path that leads to the chalice. It’s worth noting though, that filling the chalice requires taking out nearly all of the scarecrow enemies in the level, and for some reason Scarecrow Fields throws a huge number of these powerful enemies at Sir Daniel. It can be really frustrating for early players to deal with, so they should probably save this one for later, once they have better weapons.
#6 – Pumpkin Gorge
At the start of the level, players are going to want to head down the first path on the right and the tunnel it leads into. There, they can enter the room with a Merchant Gargoyle inside and smash the brick wall next to it with a club to reveal another tunnel where the chalice is. Since it’s at the start of the level, the backtracking players will have to do after killing enough enemies will be plenty severe.
#7 – The Pumpkin Serpent
This chalice is easy enough to find. Upon defeating the level’s boss, the Pumpkin King, a well near the start of level opens up. Jump down the well, and the chalice is there.
#8 – The Sleeping Village
After they’ve put a crucifix in a church, players find themselves in a gated area, where the chalice is hiding behind a breakable wall near a big house. The challenge here is that this level is full of possessed villagers, which players must avoid killing at all costs, as killing them decreases their chalice progress and make it harder to fill.
#9 – The Asylum Grounds
This chalice is actually out in the open, located right next to the giant elephant statue. However, players are going to have to solve a few riddles to open enough of the level to find enough enemies.
#10 – Inside the Asylum
Another easy-to-find chalice, this one is next to the level exit. It’s also impossible to miss, because it’s right next to the rune players have to collect to finish the level.
#11 – The Enchanted Earth
Back in the Sleeping Village, players can find an item called the Shadow Artifact in a safe in the mayor’s house, which can be used here. Once they’ve beaten this level’s boss, they can use the Artifact to open up a hatch door near the exit which leads down into a cellar with four runes on the floor. Touching the runes in the right order –orange, yellow, green, blue– opens up a gate to reveal the chalice.
#12 – The Ant Caves
A secret level hidden inside The Enchanted Earth, players can enter the Ant Caves by taking the left path at the start of the level leading to a witch’s cauldron. There they can summon a witch using the Witch Talisman they found in Cemetery Hill, at which point the witch offers them a quest. Accept it, and the witch shrinks Sir Daniel and sends him to the Ant Caves to rescue six fairies trapped inside. The chalice for this level is automatically given upon rescuing the last fairy.
#13 – Pools of the Ancient Dead
The chalice can be found hovering out in the open in the swampy section of the level. Meeting the enemy quota here might seem daunting with the big armored bad guys lurking about the place, but it’s possible to quickly dispose of them by knocking them into the water.
#14 – The Lake
There’s a whirlpool in the lake that needs to be frozen over in order to advance. Once players do that, they can head into an underwater tunnel that leads into a dilapidated house. The chalice is there.
#15 – The Crystal Caves
This is one of the easiest chalices to find in MediEvil, as it’s literally just a few steps away on the left hand-side from where Sir Daniel spawns into the level.
#16 – The Gallows Gauntlet
Upon passing through flames that require the Dragon Armor (earned by defeating the Crystal Caves’ boss) to get past, players have to step on all four of the nearby floor pads to open up cells scattered about the level. One such cell near the level’s start contains another floor pad, and that one opens a gate in the middle of the area leading to the chalice.
#17 – The Haunted Ruins
For one of the trickier chalices to unlock, players have to first fend off demons trying to get at a group of captive farmers dangling over some fires (mostly for the purpose of filling the chalice). After that, players have to make their way through the ruins as they would normally. The chalice can be found on their way out, high-up on a wall to the left of where the farmers were trapped.
#18 – The Ghost Ship
After defeating the boss, players should backtrack a little towards where some spinning platforms are, beyond which a lift can be found. It leads up to a crow’s nest-like path where the chalice can be found at its end.
#19 – The Entrance Hall
At a certain point in this level, players come to a fork in the road. They’re going to want to take the right path, as that one eventually leads to the quarters of MediEvil’s villain, Zarok, where the chalice is located.
#20 – The Time Device
For this final chalice, players have to head to the area with a tall clock-like mechanism and jump up into a nearby pipe. This will lead to the chalice, which is trapped inside a giant crystal. Freeing it requires solving a puzzle that involves redirecting lasers so they form a circle, hitting the crystal and shattering it.
