Bring on the downoadable Mega Man goodness! The fine folks at Capcom have announced the existence of Mega Man Universe for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Capcom is describing Universe as “a revolutionary take on the seminal classic, setting course for a new chapter in classic gaming.” Though no specific details or screens of the game have yet been released, a truly awesome teaser trailer has been produced by iam8bit, featuring stop-motion animation by Buddy System Studios. Check out the Mega Man Universe teaser trailer.

Crazy! As you no doubt noticed, Street Fighter’s Ryu and Ghosts and Goblins’ Arthur play prominent roles in the trailer. Sharp-eyed gamers may have caught the presence of Bionic Commando and Darkstalkers arcade cabinets in the trailer, as well. Will characters from those games also be making an appearance in Mega Man Universe? I certainly hope so.

Keiji Inafune, Mega Man creator and Head of Research and Development Management for Capcom Entertainment, certainly sounds excited about the project.

The game is going to have a presence at San Diego Comic Con 2010, where 2000 MMU-branded foam Mega Man busters, created by iam8bit, will be given away. Additionally, there will be a Mega Man cosplay contest at Capcom’s booth on Saturday July 24th, at 1:00 PM. The first fifty participants will receive Mega Man trucker hats and Mega Man busters, while the winner of the contest takes home a sketch signed by Inafune.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce Mega Man Universe. This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be. When fans finally get to see it, I believe they’ll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true.”

Of course, your friends at Game Rant will be attending Comic Con this year, and you can trust us to bring you all the latest Mega Man Universe news.

So, what do you think about Mega Man Universe? What other Capcom characters do you hope make it into the game?

Mega Man Universe is currently in development for Xbox 360’s XBLA and PS3’s PSN. A release date has not been announced.
