At Comic-Con yesterday Keiji Inafune, creator of Mega Man, and Akiki Ito, producer of the recent teaser trailer for Mega Man Universe, filled us in on what the upcoming game will entail.

Before their explanation, all we knew about the game was from the teaser trailer - which was virtually nothing outside of speculation and wonder. We knew Mega Man was making a return, but no idea what the game experience would be like. It was also noted in the teaser that you could “play as the Mega Man of your dreams,” as Inafune described.

Inafune explains the concept of Mega Man Universe:

The teaser was explained more, confirming that you can play as other notable gaming icons such as Ryu from Street Fighter and Arthur from Ghosts ’n’ Goblins. Also seen in the teaser, you can also choose to strike your nostalgic side and play as the “crappy version of Mega Man from the original cartridge.”

“[The concept] came from the idea of what Mega Man is and what it means to [different people]. Everyone has a unique idea of what Mega Man is.”

There wasn’t any Mega Man Universe gameplay footage to show yet, but Inafune and Ito said they are hard at work and hope to have something to show soon.

Inafune concluded the Comic-Con panel by revealing “You haven’t heard the last of the Mega Man announcements out there,” nodding to expect an “oft-requested thing that you guys want.” The audience shouted out Mega Man Legends 3, but Ito left mouths watering simply by smiling, saying “Thank you” and walking off the stage.

Mega Man Universe is being developed for release on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, but it “won’t be out for a while,” according to Ito.

Well, Ranters, the teaser trailer itself was explained more than what we can really expect for the title. We know that you will be able to play as other video game heroes, the experience will reflect your unique visions of Mega Man, and it will be released on PSN and XBLA.

Being that the release of the title will be via digital download and they ended the conference by teasing more Mega Man announcements - including a TBA title fans have been waiting for - is Mega Man Universe going to be a big release or just an appetizer before the main course?

Either way, I’m looking forward to learning more about Mega Man Universe. The teaser trailer definitely found me curiously intrigued considering I have fond memories of playing the Mega Man series. Heck, while writing this I couldn’t get the Mega Man 8-bit soundtrack out of my head!

Are you excited for the return of Mega Man? What are you hoping for with Mega Man Universe?
